One of the things pediatricians and dentists and montessori pre-schools talk about a lot is not giving kids sippy cups. Starting kids as young as a year on a cup as opposed to a sippy cup can help them learn valuable coordination. Start with small shot glasses so the messes aren't so big, and they will learn very quickly how to drink easily from a cup.
Rather than glass or plastic, we used wood and metal cups for our kids. Metal dents the floor in the dining room though. Consider wooden cups and shot glasses for small children to drink from. All of our drinkware gets a food-safe and alcohol safe finish. They are a light-weight, unlikely to break, and attractive cup for children.
